Every Upcoming Film That Can Re-Define Sci-Fi Movies
Audiences can look forward to many upcoming science fiction movies that could break new ground in this genre. 2020 has been a notorious year, and we can expect 2021 will compensate for it. However, it is impossible to tell what impact these films will have before the release. A lot is waiting in the list, from awaited sequels to original stories. Because of the coronavirus, the pandemic production of many movies is continuously postponed. Many films were scheduled to premiere in 2020, but their release date is continually pushed back. Most of the halted projects are big-budget, and to release them during closed theatres; they will likely lose huge money.
Christopher Nolan released his latest film Tenet, which set a bar for sci-fi films. And did a great business worldwide. However, many theatres are still closed in the US, and opening the theatres would be risky at this point. In this article, we will try to list some movies that we can look forward to releasing in the next few years.
Avatar
2 (Release 2022)
Avatar 2 is an upcoming American
sci-fi, directed, edited, produced, and co-written by James Cameron. The film
is the second sequel of the Avatar franchise. It is made collectively by
Cameron, 20th Century Studios, Josh Friedman, and Jon Landau. The film’s cast
includes Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Vin
Diesel, CJ Jones, Stephen Lang, Sam Worthington, etc. The team announced Avatar
2 in 2010 and was planned to release in 2014. However, the production was
delayed due to the development of new technology to shoot underwater sequences
efficiently. The shooting began in Manhattan Beach, California, on 15 August
2017.
Cameron stated that if Avatar
were successful, he would make two sequels of the film. The sequel was
scheduled to be released in December 2014 or 2015. He said that the sequel
would explore the broader universe of Polyphemus. Cameron developed motion
capture technology underwater because water reflects dots and leaves unintended
marks, forcing filmmakers to use CGI to shoot underwater sequences. However,
Cameron’s effort will surely make the visual of the film breathtaking and
authentic. It will also open new technology for future use.
The
Matrix 4 (Release 2022)
The Matrix 4 is an upcoming
American science fiction movie, and it will be the fourth installment of the
Matrix franchise. The film is directed and co-written by Lana Wachowski, Lilly,
Jada Pinkett Smith, Keanu Reeves, and Lambert Wilson. The movie will be
produced and distributed under Village Roadshow Pictures and Warner Bros.
Pictures, which is scheduled to release on 1 April 2022. Lilly Wachowski
confirmed during the promotion of Jupiter Ascending in February 2015 that they
are planning to return with the Matrix’s sequel. The stunt coordinator of the
Matrix franchise, Chad Stahelski, shared in May 2019 that one of the sisters is
the part of the sequel, but he is not sure whether she would also direct it.
Shortly after the statement, he clarified that he did not mean to confirm their
involvement, and he was talking hypothetically. The official announcement of
the film was made by Warner Bro. on 20 August 2019.
The leaked footage has created
anticipation among fans that they need to come up with theories. Many believe
that Neo might not have his powers, and Trinity may possess the abilities. The
explosion footage depicted that the team practically created those effects and
not or limitedly used CGI. The sequel has already created much hype and might
be even more successful than the Matrix sequel series.
Dune
(Release 2020)
Dune is an upcoming
science-fiction movie directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay
with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film is co-produced by Hungary, Canada, the
United States, and the United Kingdom. Dune is the adaptation of the novel of
the same name written by Frank Herbert; the first movie will cover the first
half of the book. The film stars Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Timothee
Chalamet, Josh Brolin, David Dastmalchian, Jason Momoa, Charlotte Rampling,
etc. Dune is planned to release on 18 December 2020 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
David Lynch adapted the novel in
1984; it was considered as his worst film. Dune is a tough book to adapt as a
film. It is very long, dense, and complex to portray in a screenplay. The
project is packed with some serious talents like director Villeneuve who is
known for his unique creations like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Audiences
are excited to witness the complex Herbert’s novel on the big screen.

COVID-19. In an interview with Indiewire, Hartigan asked, mentioning the
COVID-19 that when your setback is everyone’s setback, how do you grieve? The
pandemic is a misfortune for everyone, but it became an advantage for the
Little project Fish.
All of the above movies have the
potential to do great business and will create a significant impact on the
industry. However, it is impossible to predict their fate before they are
released. Some factors could go wrong, including the opening of theatres,
audiences to reach out in the cinema halls, hinder production, and many more.
However, if the films get enough attention and the right exposure, they could set
bars to the related genre and upcoming movies. These are some movies that we
can expect to release in theatres by next year. I hope this article is
informative for you.
