How to Fix Steam Disk Write Error?

A Steam Disk Write Error usually appears as a pop-up error message when you try to install or download a new game, or when you seek to update a game. It may also occur when you launch a game that requires an update.

Update the drivers

• Download and install Driver Easy software.

• Click open the software and select ‘Scan Now’. The software will scan your entire PC and find problems with the device and drivers if there is any.

• You can select the ‘Update All’ to download and install correct versions of the drivers automatically in case you are using the Pro version. Otherwise, you can just click on ‘Update’.

• Make sure you reboot your PC to see the changes.

• Now check if the disk writes (read) error still exists when you download and update your game. If it does, go to Fix 2.

• Press the ‘Windows’ key + ‘R’ on your keyboard. Now, on the ‘Run’ window, type ‘%ProgramFIles(x86)%’ and press ‘Enter’.

On the bottom of the screen, you’ll find a 0KB-sized file. You need to delete this file.

Remove any corrupted files

• Press and hold the ‘Windows’ key + ‘R’ on your keyboard. Then type in ‘%ProgramFIles(x86)%’ on the ‘Run’ window and click ‘Enter’.

• Go to ‘Steam’ > ‘logs’ > ‘content_log’.

• Check if there is a failure to write an error at the bottom of the window.

If you see that there is an error, delete the corrupted file by observing the path of error or move to the next fix.

attributes disk clear read-only

• The ‘#’ represents the number of hard drives that are showing you the error.

• Now, exit the ‘Command Prompt’ window.

• Then, reinstall or reupdate and check again if the Disk Write Error is still there.

Turn off antivirus software

Antivirus and antimalware programs in your system interfere in the workings of any operating program. This also causes interference with many disk and driver operations and this might be the reason for your problem in running Steam. That’s why disable the antivirus software in your system. For this, go to the ‘Settings’ to your antivirus program and disable it or set ‘Steam’ as an exception.

Check Firewall

Make sure your system’s firewalls are not intervening with Steam servers. If it is so, reach out to tech support or set ‘Steam’ as an exception.
